  1. Hardcover books

Hardcover books are hard-bound books with seen spines. Often they have an extra cover, as protection. The first edition of most books is released as hardcover while the following releases are in paperback.

The exception to the rule is in most cases: certain genres and indie press books.

Hardcover books tend to cost more but last longer than paperback.

2. Trade paperbacks

Trade paperbacks are the standard paperback books in most bookstores. Because they are easier to carry around.

The history of the paperback goes back to World War II when soldiers wanted to have a book they could easily carry with them.

3. Mass Market paperbacks

The difference between paperback books and Mass Market paperbacks — is to be found in the name.

The Mass Market paperbacks — are made for the masses. You’ll mainly find romance books in this format.
