The Hard Truth About Relationships
Relationships are hard. Breakups and divorces are more common now than ever before.
“My sister is celebrating her 50th anniversary today,” a woman proudly announced the moment she saw me. Then she continued, “And both her children are divorced.” I congratulated her but could see shame on her face, not regarding her sister. But the divorces her niece and nephew had gone through.
This reminded me of a discussion I once had with a doctor’s assistant about relationships. He recently got married and had a blissfulness about him. Upon discovering that I had been in a relationship for over a decade, he had some questions.
I was surprised initially. But as I thought about it, there were important points I wanted him to remember from our talk.
One thing that I made clear for him was:
Relationships are hard!
It doesn’t matter what kind of relationship it is — whether with a friend, sibling, or parent — any deeper relationship is hard to maintain. If neglected, it will likely fade away.
